An Artist’s Journey

October 1, 2020 By Staff Contributor

Artist Tim Clayton stands and smiles in front of a well on which his oil paintings are displayed.

Tim Clayton’s Layered Art

It took a few years of wandering for Tim Clayton to discover his passion for painting. When describing his path, Tim focuses on the evolution of his approach to art and his style of expression. He describes it as “adding layers, building it up, thinking of his art as an accumulation of ideas, becoming more complex and nuanced over time.”

Tim noted that he always starts his paintings outdoors. Working with oil paints, he says, “I can’t always finish a study, but there is always an immediacy and energy in the light. I’ll paint a small sketch, reacting to the light, but often without time to refine. In the studio I have time to think and refine. I have a whole closet full of these sketches. Sometimes I didn’t find the idea or the moment passed without enough time to resolve the scene. But I go through the closet often and find inspiration, the spark of why I chose that perspective or even why it didn’t work to inform another approach.”

Tim pointed out his “Quiet Fields” painting — “it was early in March and a scary time. For me, the painting process itself was calming. It’s what I hope to show and share with my work.”

The Bridge Gallery is located at 8566 Shepherdstown Pike in Shepherdstown (on Route 230, around the bend from O’Hurleys General Store). Kathryn Burns, the owner and curator, showcases local artists with a regular schedule of exhibitions in the showroom (and online). She also provides framing services for her clientele. Currently open Fri/Sat/Sun Noon to 5 pm (and by appointment at other times).
