Sue Marks has lived in the Eastern Panhandle for nearly 35 years, and opened The Design Center (112 W. Burke St., Martinsburg, WV) in 1996. Her goal is to work with clients to create a home environment that best reflects who they are, their comforts, and their personal tastes.
Marks is an award-winning designer and registered Interior Design Society member with a bachelor’s degree in business management/design. Together with the designers on her staff, she works directly with clients to plan and implement their home-design dreams.
“By providing our professional design expertise, we can help you design a living space that is beautiful, functional, and most of all, that looks and feels like your own,” she explained. “It is not our objective to be recognized as having a particular design style—we’d rather have our work reflect the individual tastes and personalities of our clients.”
Marks and her staff can assist in every aspect of home design and remodeling—from color, furniture, and accessory selection to space planning and project coordination. In doing so, she has made a career out of connecting with customers and creating the perfect space for their desires and needs. That attention to detail has allowed her to work as the principle designer for a large production-home builder within the region for nearly 20 years—completing over 100 model homes, sales centers, and even the corporate office in Frederick, MD.
“I work with other developers doing model homes, as well as doing staging for realtors and investment entrepreneurs,” she explained. “I also do a specialty called house-fluffing, which entails using what the client has, and re-purposing it within their home or office—removing unnecessary items, and changing placement of art/accessories.”
The Design Center’s services include floor plans, furniture selection and placement, selection of appliances, fixtures and hardware, painting, chair caning, custom tile designs, selection of exterior and interior finishes, upholstering, light carpentry work, window treatments, sewing for the home, trim work, cabinet making, landscape work, and general yard work.
Marks values her creative process—including the client every step of the way—and measures success by their happiness and the overall collaboration. “I love to repurpose and make situations affordable for my clients,” she said. “I really love to house-fluff, as it’s a quick and easy fix for my clients who don’t want to spend a lot, but I’ve also been working more in the restaurant space—with some local full-service projects really taking shape. So, our service offerings here really do run the full spectrum.”
