Owner Marshall McCormick opened M Street Bakery (618 N. Mildred St., Ranson) in October 2017, bringing the community morning coffee and more. “I have baked my whole life,” he explained. “I lived in Paris when I was in my twenties, and one of my many jobs while there was working in a pastry shop. I was a helper—cleaning, washing dishes, and assisting with the less-demanding pastry tasks.”
McCormick brought much of what he learned and more back home. M Street has expanded in just a short amount of time—now offering pastries, coffee, soups, and sandwiches.
“I developed the menu around the primary types of dough: laminated dough, used to make croissants and Danishes; rich dough, used to make brioches, the power buns, and cinnamon rolls; quick dough, used to make eclairs and cream puffs; and sourdough, which I use to make the bread,” he maintained. “I particularly love the sourdough bread and the croissants and Danishes.”
McCormick had his eye on the building where M Street Bakery currently resides for quite a while. Although he looked at a number of spaces for his business, he knew which spot would be perfect. He enjoys having a space that can cater to nearby schools, the hospital, and other large institutions.
“We are partners with Ranson Elementary, and I very much enjoy the interaction with offices and shops in both Ranson and Charles Town,” he said. “We’ve catered a number of breakfasts, lunches, and special events.”
The menu selection at M Street continues to grow, and the community appreciates not only the variety, but the quality of goods McCormick is offering up.
“The bakery continues to expand its offering,” he added. “We started with pastries and specialty coffees, and now offer a range of sandwiches, soups, breads, quiches, and recently rolled out our cold-drink offerings: smoothies (berry and green), frozen latte, frozen cold brew, lemonade, and ice tea.
“However, our core products—sweet and savory pastries—are the favorites. Customers like the consistency of our baked goods, but also the variety we provide. We typically have three types of eclairs each day, with different fillings and glazes.”
M Street Bakery is open Monday-Friday, 6:30am-4pm, and Saturday, 7:30am-4pm.
